Crossovers, SUVs, and trucks accounted for many of the new vehicles sold in Canada last year, but there are still plenty of buyers out there who want a sedan to get around, as opposed to a high-riding vehicle that may be more expensive and have poorer fuel economy.
And while a two-wheel-drive car can be difficult to live with during Canadian winters, all-wheel-drive sedans are still available across a wide price range. In this list, we will go over some of our favourite all-wheel-drive sedans on sale today in the budget, mid-range, and high-end price ranges, providing you with the knowledge necessary to make a confident buying decision now and for the winter. Just remember to also budget for winter tires, which play a key role in maximizing traction in winter months, even when there’s no snow on the ground.
Less than $30,000
The Subaru Impreza is the cheapest all-wheel drive vehicle on sale today, with prices starting from just $19,995 for the entry-level model. If you’re on a budget, want a new car and feel as though you need all-wheel drive, you don’t need to look any further than Subaru’s well-known AWD sedan.
The newest and most up-to-date budget-friendly sedan with all-wheel drive is the new Mazda3. You will have to spend quite a bit more to get yourself into a Mazda3 with AWD than you would an Impreza, with the cheapest available model being the $26,000 GS trim. That’s a lot for a compact car, but the Mazda3 is quite refined for a small vehicle, with lots of standard features – including multi-zone air conditioning, heated steering wheel, and adaptive cruise control – and receives good reviews.
If you need a bit more room than what the compact sedans above offer, consider stepping up to the slightly larger Subaru Legacy mid-size sedan. Prices start at $26,395 and in addition to more space, you get a bit more standard equipment than the Impreza too, including a CVT automatic transmission and heated seats.
Competing directly with the Subaru Legacy is the Nissan Altima, which now offers standard all-wheel drive in Canada from $28,098. While newer and a bit more modern and sportier-looking than the Subaru Legacy, the two mid-size four doors offer similar equipment and have very similar powertrains in base form.
Between $30,000 and $60,000
Moving into the premium/luxury segment, we have the Acura TLX. The least expensive TLX with AWD is the sporty A-Spec model, which starts at $42,490. Key features of this model/trim include a 290 horsepower, naturally aspirated 3.5-litre V6 and sport-tuned suspension and steering.
The Kia Stinger is the first sport sedan from the usually reserved Korean automaker. In Canada, it is available exclusively with AWD and starts at $44,995 for the GT model. This vehicle offers more power than the TLX thanks to its 365 horsepower twin-turbo 3.3-litre V6.
The most expensive of our mid-range offerings is the Audi A4, which starts at $46,200 for the Komfort model with quattro AWD. Powering this model is a 248 horsepower 2.0-litre turbocharged engine, while leather seats, a leather wheel, a standard glass sunroof, and other amenities you would expect at this price are standard.
If you’ve got some more money to spend on an AWD sedan, you may want to look at the mid-size Mercedes-Benz E-Class. The entry-level E 300 4Matic model starts at $63,100 and comes with a raft of luxurious amenities and up-to-date technology. It’s also available in two AMG performance flavours and, if you prefer, as a station wagon.
Serving as a direct competitor to the Mercedes-Benz E-Class is the Audi A6. Prices start lower at $62,400 for the 45 TFSI quattro Progressiv model, but whereas the base Mercedes outputs 255 horsepower, the A6 gets 248 horsepower from its engine, though both vehicles derive 273 lb-ft of torque from their turbocharged 2.0-litre engines. The A6 is also newer, but as such, there fewer less trims and model variants offered than the E-Class.
The Porsche Panamera isn’t for bargain hunters, with prices starting at $104,600 for the Panamera 4 trim. Prices can go up quite steeply from here, however, thanks to Porsche’s infamously expensive options list. There’s a number of model variants available as well including a handling-focused GTS, a sporty S E-Hybrid plug-in and a performance-focused Turbo.
