Ford is expanding its family of off-road pickup trucks for the 2021 model year with an F-150 Tremor that will be available in three variants when it arrives in dealerships next summer.

Based on the F-150 SuperCrew with a 5.5-foot box, the Tremor comes standard with a 3.5L EcoBoost V6 making 400 hp and 500 lb-ft of torque, a 10-speed automatic transmission, and four-wheel drive. The F-150 joins Tremor versions of the Ranger mid-size and F-Series Super Duty trucks that are already available.

Ford’s engineers revised the truck’s front hub knuckles and upper control arms, and swapped in Tremor-specific shocks – monotube up front and twin-tube units in the rear – tuned for softer low-speed damping and better ride control in severe off-roading.

The transmission sends power to a standard locking rear differential, and buyers can upgrade the front diff to a Torsen limited slip. The Tremor’s transfer case is based on that in the F-150 Raptor, providing clutch-based all-wheel traction on demand in the truck’s on-road drive modes and mechanically locked 4WD performance when the driver selects one of the off-road modes.

Among the Tremor’s off-road tricks is an optional one-pedal drive mode that automatically applies the brakes as the driver lifts off the throttle for easier rock crawling. Also on offer will be a trail turn assist feature that applies the inside rear brake in turns to allow the truck to cut tighter corners.

A rock crawl drive mode promises to help by engaging the rear locking diff, deactivating stability/traction control, softens throttle response, adjusts the transmission’s shift points, and turns on the optional 360-degree camera for extra visibility. You’ll also be able to get a trail control system that will work like off-road cruise control.

Traction comes from 33-inch all-terrain tires on 18-inch wheels, a setup that Ford says adds ground clearance, a one-inch wider stance and approach, breakover and departure angles of 27.6, 21.2 and 24.3 degrees, respectively. Ford will also add a front bash plate to protect the Tremor’s front-end components.

Ford says the F-150 Tremor will be able to tow nearly 5,000 kg (10,900 lb) and carry 855 kg (1,885 lb) of payload.

Other Tremor touches will include orange-trimmed badges on the exterior and similar highlights on the seats, dash and doors.

The Ford F-150 Tremor will come in standard, mid and high feature configurations, all of which will share the same basic off-road hardware. Watch for Ford to reveal Tremor pricing closer to its launch next year.
