Fiat Chrysler Automobiles today announced that Jeep’s first-ever plug-in hybrid electric vehicle, the Wrangler 4xe, will sell for $54,995 when it arrives in showrooms in the first quarter of 2021.
That starting price is for the Wrangler Sahara 4xe, while an uplevel Rubicon 4xe trim will carry an MSRP of $59,995.
The Jeep Wrangler 4xe is powered by a 2.0L turbocharged four-cylinder engine that works with an electric motor to generate 375 hp and 470 lb-ft of torque, which is fed through an eight-speed automatic transmission to the Wrangler’s four-wheel-drive system. A second, smaller motor replaces the alternator and is used to provide extra charging for the 17-kWh battery pack and functions as a starter for the gas engine.

Jeep’s pricing announcement says a full charge of the 2021 Wrangler 4xe’s battery stores enough electricity “to handle most daily commutes (and) … hours on the trail.” While today’s official news release does not mention an EV range estimate, Jeep.ca indicates the 4xe will drive up to 40 km on its battery alone – just enough juice to cover the 35-km Rubicon Trail.
Jeep also promises an energy consumption rating of 4.7 Le/100 km when running on electricity, and a zero-to-97-km/h (0-60 mph) sprint in a bit more than six seconds.
In addition to its new powertrain, the Wrangler Sahara 4xe will come standard with 20-inch wheels, leather seating, a body-coloured hardtop, LED lighting, navigation in an 8.4-inch touchscreen, a nine-speaker stereo, Selec-Trac full-time 4WD, and Dana 44 axles. Rubicon trim trades out Selec-Trac for a heavy-duty Rock-Trac 4WD setup.
FCA says the Wrangler 4xe is eligible for $8,000 in purchase rebates from the Quebec government and a $1,500 incentive for buyers in B.C. However, it does not qualify for the federal government’s iZEV rebate program, which stipulates a starting price of less than $45,000 for vehicles with six seats or fewer.
